(Old) NOTES on Vivaldi Opus 1 - Trio Sonatas I - XII Estienne Roger Marchand Libraire No. 363, Amsterdam [facsimile] from scanned material done by Don Anthony in June & July 2004 transferred to CCARH stage2 format by Fran Bennion & into files md\vivaldi\roger\trio_son\op01no01 - op01no12 The notes, their values, stem directions, rests, beamings, and the fermatas were scanned with a high degree of accuracy. The accidentals were not always scanned accurately, sharps often being scanned as naturals (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 2). Fermata placement often needed to be adjusted with print suggestions. The scan placed them (and also the triplet markings "*" & "!") in column 32 and they had to be moved. Dynamics were scanned as Musical Directions with "*" in col.1, "G" in column 17, & the dynamic in column 25. Vertical placement was adjusted in "ss2ed". When viewed in the score, the horizontal placement did not always make the best sense. Roger also had many fewer dynamic markings than the scanned edition. Our editorial dynamics appeared in [] when printed. There were many more slurs in the scanned edition than in the ESF facsimile. This mainly happend in the Vc./Bc. parts. The scanner note often picked up a Print suggestion "P C32:o" or ":u" & we deleted them for they weren't necessary in running our programs. Often it was picking up miscellanies in the scanned material, i.e. when there was probably a dotted slur over two 8ths & identified it as a quarter note (No.1, Mv.1, Vc. m.8, & No.4, Mv.5, Vn.1 m.5). Our editorial slurs are dashed lines. Roger had more cautionary accidentals than the scanned edition, except for the 2nd note in an octave jump when Roger didn't always restate the accidental (No.1, Mvt.4, m.17). The headings (rows 4-9) were redone and notes (i.e. the fact that Op.1 No.1 was in g minor but was notated in one flat) were added. Tempo markings had to be added (i.e. D:Allegro). An "S" appeared at the beginning of line 13 just below the "$" in most files and was removed. The facsimile had a light double bar between movements, but in movements where there are repeats (i.e. No. 1, Mvts. 2, 4, & 5) their repeat signs are like our heavy double bars. At the end of movements where the second part was to be repeated there was a heavy ":|:" and there was also a light double bar to end the movement. I just entered our usual light-heavy double bar to end movements. Repeat signs in the middle of movements were not accurately scanned and when a ":|:" appeared near the end of a measure, i.e. just before the last 8th, an extra measure of an 8th note was created (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 2). When there was a pick up measure it was scanned as measure 1, so the measure numbers had to be changed for that movement. The "/" through the figure "7" actually looks like a flat and acts like one (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 1, meas.3 & Mvt.4, meas.9). The "\" through the figure "6" is more normal and acts like a + (i.e. No. 1, Mvt.3, meas.2). A "\" in conjunction with a 5 or a 9 didn't print so I used "5+" (No. 2, Mvt. 1, measure 5 amd Mvts. 2-4) and "9+" (No. 2, Mvt. 1, measure 6). SONATA VII in Eb Major, RV 65 (Roger is notated in two flats.) It has been put into 3 flats (modern notation) in op1no7ef. Movement 1 - Preludio, Largo (C) The melody is carried by the Vn.1 and the accompaning voices ESF were all scanned as measures of four groups of 16ths with note the 1st & 2nd 16ths and the 3rd & 4th 16th in each group tied together. It is clear that a 16th pulse was intended and they were entered here as slurs. Movement 2 - Allemanda, Allegro (C) Because of a 16th pickup and a repeat sign mid measure, the measures had to be renumbered and the irests just before the repeat signs had to be removed. Meas. 20 - Violoncello - The last beat was scanned as an 8th rest and an irest. Roger had an 8th rest and an 8th note. Meas. 23 - Violino 2 - Last half measure scanned as two quarters. Roger had a quarter, an 8th rest, & an 8th note. Meas. 23 - Vc. & Bc. - Last note scanned as a quarter note. Roger had an 8th rest and an 8th note. Meas. 26 - Violino 2 - Scanned as a quarter, an 8th rest, a quarter, and an irest. Roger had a quarter, an 8th rest, an 8th, a quarter, & a quarter rest. Meas. 29 - Violino 2 - Roger has the "p" on the 3rd beat of Make ed. the measure and the scan had it on the first beat of m.30 dynanic? It makes more musical sense to have it on the 1st beat so I changed the placement for the CCARH version. Diff. Meas. 35 - Violino 1 - First beat scanned as triplet 8ths. edition Roger has an 8th and two 16ths. Meas. 35 - All parts - Scan missed the fermata on the last note. Roger had a fermata on all parts. Movement 3 - Sarabanda, Andante (3/4) Movement 4 and Mvt. 5 - Giga, Presto There are two versions of this movement both in three flats. The Roger facsimile is our main version of this Mvt. MOVEMENT 04 is the way it was notated in Roger, namely 12/8 for Vn.1 and "C" (common time) for Vn.2 and the Bc. MOVEMENT 05 is the alternate version with the meters regularized, with all four parts in 12/8. No repeat sign in m.1 in Roger, implying that from m.6 one went back to the beginning. Rhythmically inaccurate, but the initial 8th rests were probably assumed to be ignored. 1st & 2nd endings were added at the end and repeat signs were added and repositioned for rhythmical accuracy and combatability between parts. Scanning problems - In the scan the Violino 1, 2, and the Bc. are in 12/8 and the Violoncello is in C. One consequence was that the Violino 2 had it's dotted half notes scanned as having three beeps each and the dotted quarters two beeps. (i.e. Meas. 9-10 , which had 2 dotted quarters and one dotted half, were scanned as having 7 beeps and those measures with 4 dotted quarters were scanned as having 8 beeps per measure. Q:1 & T:12/8 in the scan. I changed to Q:2 like Violino 1.) After the 1st and 2nd endings at the end of the movement, the scan created a series of short measures which were all rests. It also neglected to pick up "start-end2". I have added 1st and 2nd endings like the scan and have put all of the parts in 12/8. The lowest three voices, which were mostly just quarter notes or half notes, will now have a dot after the quarter and half notes. The scanned edition handled the pick up notes differently and different from Roger. Meas. 2 - Violino 1 - In the 2nd group of three 8ths in the measure, the scanner picked up TWO different slurs going under the first two 8ths. The slur in Roger went above.
