NOTES on Vivaldi Opus 1 - Trio Sonatas I - XII (Nov. 16, & Dec.7, 2009) Estienne Roger Marchand Libraire No. 363, Amsterdam [facsimile] The facsimile had a light double bar between movements, but in movements where there are repeats (i.e. No. 1, Mvts. 2, 4, & 5) their repeat signs are like our heavy double bars. At the end of movements where the second part was to be repeated there was a heavy ":|:" and there was also a light double bar to end the movement. Our usual light-heavy double bar were used to end movements. Adagio movements were treated differently depending on their function in the Sonata, and the way they were notated in the Roger fascimile. The Adagios in Sonatas I & III came between movements strongly in G Minor & C Major respectively and were considered separate movements, even though the Adagio in III was only 4 measures long. In Sonata IV the Allegro preceeding the Adagio didn't come to a cadence but morphed into the Adagio with only the normal single bar and finally came to a cadance 7 meas. later so was not considered a movement on its own. The "/" through the figure "7" actually looks like a flat and acts like one (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 1, meas.3 & Mvt.4, meas.9). The "\" through the figure "6" is more normal and acts like a + (i.e. No. 1, Mvt.3, meas.2). A "\" in conjunction with a 5 or a 9 didn't print so I used "5+" (No. 2, Mvt. 1, measure 5 amd Mvts. 2-4) and "9+" (No. 2, Mvt. 1, measure 6). SONATA VIII in D Minor, RV 64 Movement 1 - Preludio, Largo (C) Meas. 21 - Violino 2, Vc., & Bc. - No fermata on last note in Roger. Added fermatas to the CCARH files. Movement 2 - Corrente, Allegro (3/4) The time signature in the Vn 2 part was notated as (3) in Roger. Meas. 25 - All parts but the Vn.2 have A4 half notes prior to a repeat, & in all parts but Vn.2 the half note is followed by an 8th rest going back or ahead to to an 8th note pickup. Vn.2 has the half note tied 8th to an 8th, which is the only voice carrying over the rest, which seems inappropriate. Entered an EDITORIAL rest instead of the tied 8th. &1 ("&1" in stage2 file.) Meas. 44/1 - Vn.1 - Roger had an E5 which seems wrong, for the Bc. had a figure of "6 4" on an A2 & there is an A pedal from m.41-6. Meas.44-46 is essentially a repeat of m.41-43, with Vn.2 & Vn.2 switching parts EXCEPT for m.44/1, which is an A4 in m.41. The Org. will be playing D & F & A and I entered A4 for Vn.1, m.44/1 like Vn.2 in m.41/1. In stage2 flagged (with &1) as an EDITORIAL note, which has its font changed in the i-files and appears as a que size note.. Meas. 60 - Vn.1 & Vn.2 - Simmilar to Meas.25 but now in Roger just the Vc. & Bc. have a half note & an 8th rest before the repeat sign. Entered an EDITORIAL rest for Vn.1 & 2. Movement 3 - Grave (C) Movement 4 - Giga, Allegro (12/8) Meas. 33 - Violino 1 - In the other parts there was a "p" two 8ths earlier than in the Vn.1, which makes more musical sense. Entered it like an EDITORIAL "p", in [].
