(Old) NOTES on Vivaldi Opus 1 - Trio Sonatas I - XII Estienne Roger Marchand Libraire No. 363, Amsterdam [facsimile] from scanned material done by Don Anthony in June & July 2004 transferred to CCARH stage2 format by Fran Bennion & into files md\vivaldi\roger\trio_son\op01no01 - op01no12 The notes, their values, stem directions, rests, beamings, and the fermatas were scanned with a high degree of accuracy. The accidentals were not always scanned accurately, sharps often being scanned as naturals (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 2). Fermata placement often needed to be adjusted with print suggestions. The scan placed them (and also the triplet markings "*" & "!") in column 32 and they had to be moved. Dynamics were scanned as Musical Directions with "*" in col.1, "G" in column 17, & the dynamic in column 25. Vertical placement was adjusted in "ss2ed". When viewed in the score, the horizontal placement did not always make the best sense. Roger also had many fewer dynamic markings than the scanned edition. Our editorial dynamics appeared in [] when printed. There were many more slurs in the scanned edition than in the ESF facsimile. This mainly happend in the Vc./Bc. parts. The scanner note often picked up a Print suggestion "P C32:o" or ":u" & we deleted them for they weren't necessary in running our programs. Often it was picking up miscellanies in the scanned material, i.e. when there was probably a dotted slur over two 8ths & identified it as a quarter note (No.1, Mv.1, Vc. m.8, & No.4, Mv.5, Vn.1 m.5). Our editorial slurs are dashed lines. Roger had more cautionary accidentals than the scanned edition, except for the 2nd note in an octave jump when Roger didn't always restate the accidental (No.1, Mvt.4, m.17). The headings (rows 4-9) were redone and notes (i.e. the fact that Op.1 No.1 was in g minor but was notated in one flat) were added. Tempo markings had to be added (i.e. D:Allegro). An "S" appeared at the beginning of line 13 just below the "$" in most files and was removed. The facsimile had a light double bar between movements, but in movements where there are repeats (i.e. No. 1, Mvts. 2, 4, & 5) their repeat signs are like our heavy double bars. At the end of movements where the second part was to be repeated there was a heavy ":|:" and there was also a light double bar to end the movement. I just entered our usual light-heavy double bar to end movements. Repeat signs in the middle of movements were not accurately scanned and when a ":|:" appeared near the end of a measure, i.e. just before the last 8th, an extra measure of an 8th note was created (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 2). When there was a pick up measure it was scanned as measure 1, so the measure numbers had to be changed for that movement. The "/" through the figure "7" actually looks like a flat and acts like one (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 1, meas.3 & Mvt.4, meas.9). The "\" through the figure "6" is more normal and acts like a + (i.e. No. 1, Mvt.3, meas.2). A "\" in conjunction with a 5 or a 9 didn't print so I used "5+" (No. 2, Mvt. 1, measure 5 amd Mvts. 2-4) and "9+" (No. 2, Mvt. 1, measure 6). SONATA III in C Major, RV 61 Movement 1 - Adagio (Common time, C) Meas. 2 - The scan of this measure was the same as for the Violoncello part except there was a "back 16", followed by an "irest 4" then a "rest 2 ...e". Meas. 3 - Violino 1 - Scan missed the # on the F5s. Violino 2 - First two notes scanned as quarters. Roger had them as a dotted quarter and an eighth. Meas. 5 - Violino 2 - Last note scanned as D#5. D5 in Roger. Scan wrong see figure. Meas. 6 - Vc. & Bc. - 2nd note scanned as F3. F#3 in Roger. Diff. edition Movement 2 - Allemanda, Allegro (C) The Vc./Bc. part in this movement had no slurs in Roger but Diff. edition ? there were remains of "over" & "under" commands in the scan Check scanned ed.? when I observed it in 9-09. Honored the Roger edition. Meas. 3 - Bc. - The 3rd note was scanned as E3 and should be a D3. The Violoncello part was scanned correctly. Meas. 9-10 - Violino 1 - Scan missed the # in the F#5s. The figured bass had a # on a D3 confirming the F#s. Meas. 10 - Violino 1 - Roger place "p" on last 8th note Roger placement seems of the measure. Ricordi had it on the third beat. sensible for Vn.2 is Violino 2 - "p" scanned on the last 8th of the 3rd beat. changing the dynamic. Meas. 13 & 14 - These bar lines were scanned as light-heavy and heavy light bars with ":|" and "|:" repeat signs. At the end of Roger bar 13 was an mheavy4 bar line with ":|: Meas. 14 - Violino 1 - Slurs scanned wrong in last 3 beats of the measure. Meas. 15 - Violino 2 - Scan missed slurs on 1st beat and was wrong on the 2nd and 4th beat. Meas. 16 - Violino 2 - Scan was only right on one out of four groups of slurs. Meas. 19 - Bc. - The last beat of this measure was scanned as an i-rest instead of an 8th rest + an 8th note. Meas. 21 - Violoncello - The last beat was scanned as a dotted 8th and a 16th. Roger had an 8th and two 16ths. Meas. 22 - Violino 1 - Second quarter note scanned as two eighths. It should be an 8th and two 32nds. Meas. 22 - Violino 2 - Scan missed a tie. Meas. 25 - Violino 1 - Scan missed the # on the C#5s. The figured bass had a # on A3. Meas. 30 - Violino 2 - The first quarter was scanned as two eighths. In Roger it was an 8th and two 16ths. Meas. 36 - Violino 2 - The third quarter was scanned as a tied quarter note and it should have been two eighths. Movement 3 - Adagio (C) In the scanned version there was a different dynamic in each of the first three measures of this four measure movement. There were no dynamics in the Roger edition. Movement 4 - Sarabanda, Allegro (3/8) All but three measures of the Violoncello and Bc. part were measures consisting of a dotted 8th followed by three 8ths. In the scanned edition in all but one measure these had a slur over the last three 16th and in Roger there were no slurs. Meas. 4 & 7 - Violino 2 - Scanned three 8ths. Middle 8th should should have been two 16ths. Scan missed tie on C5 from m.7-8. Meas. 13 - Violoncello & Bc. - Scan missed # on F#3. Were #s missing Meas. 14 - Violoncello - Scanned three 8ths. Roger had a in Ricordi or dotted eighth followed by three 16ths. just missed in Meas. 17 - All parts were scanned as a "mheavy2 17 |: :|". the scan. I changed this to "mheavy4 17 :|: " Roger had a # on Meas. 18 - Violino 1 - Scanned as three 8ths & missed # on a D4 plus clearly the F#5s. Middle 8th should have been two 16ths. marked #s in all Meas. 21 - Violino 1 - Scan missed # on F#5s. parts.
