NOTES on BRAHMS SYMPHONIES Breitkopf & Hartel, Leipzig SYMPHONY No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68 (c. 1877) - Band 1 p.1 Movement 1 - In poco sostenuto (6/8) m.1-7; (9/8) m.8; (6/8) m. 9-37; Allegro (6/8) m.38-513. Meas. 1-8, 25-28, & 275-283 in the viola part and m.189-195 in the cello part were marked "div." in the B&H score, but many of the double and triple stops undoubtedly should also be divided. Two "sound" parts were entered for the violas and also for the celli, but the double stops in sections not labeled "div" were left as in the score. Meas. 38 - Flutes - Too many beats by an 8th rest in B&H. Mistake. Entered like Corni 3 & 4. Meas. 97 - Trumpets - No staccato dot in B & H. Oversight? Dots in all other parts and everyone has eighth notes. Meas.242-3 - Celli - Begin these meas. with a dotted quarter. Violas have a quarter note & an 8th rest in m.242-3. Winds and horns have the same. Except the for violas, the strings have notes for the first dotted quarter. Left as was in B&H. Meas.341 - Bassoons - Staccato dot missing. There was one in every other voice. Assume it was an oversight. Meas.331/6 - Violas - Af3 in B&H. Mistake. In octaves with the violins who have a G3 & in 3rds with Celli. Entered G3. Meas.337/2 - Violas - No accent in B&H. Oversight. Accents in all other parts with the same rhythmic pattern. Meas.343 - Contrabassoon - No staccato dot in B & H. Oversight? Here the material is like the lower strings, which have dots. Meas.382 - Clarinets - No staccato dot in B & H. Oversight. Error message when trying to use "mskpage" on Aug.4th'06. No pages made. transferring Run-time error: array subscript 1 of integer variable: recflag is out of bounds at line = 2361 subscript = 100001, upper limit = 100000 2361 recflag(k) = current_recf /* New &dA01/06/04&d@ every record is now flagged Movement 2 - Andante sostenuto (3/4) In B & H the Violin Solo part begins at Meas. 90. The Violin 1 part from meas. 1-83 was reproduced in the Solo part for the convience of the Violin soloist.. Meas. 63-64 in the viola part and m.102-104 in cello part were marked "div." in the B&H score, but chords with opposing stem directions (i.e. m.15 Viol. 2 & m.16 Celli) and many double & triple stops should also be divided. Two "sound" parts were entered for the violas & celli, but the double stops in all parts in sections not labeled "div" were left as in the score. Meas. 37 - Violas - B & H is missing a cresc. wedge in this meas. It is in all the other string parts & was added here. Meas. 53 - Bassoons - Added a "sf" on the first note like in all other parts. (Also in col.13-4 added "&1") Meas. 80-2 - Viol.2 - Added wedges (decresc.- cresc.- decasc.) as in other string parts. Meas. 80 - Corno 1 - B & H missing an 8th note beat in this measure. Added a dot to the E5 quarter note. Meas. 91-94 - Corno 2 - Trumpets, Timp. & strings have a cresc. wedge here on beat 1 (& decresc., cresc., & decresc. wedges in the following 3 measures) but the 2nd Horns do not. A possible oversight? The upper winds don't begin their cresc. until the 3rd beat. The melody is in the Oboe 1, Horn 1, & Solo Violin. I feel that Brahms might have thought that having a cresc. in another horn might detract from listening to the Horn 1 solo? Meas. 122 - Clarinet 1 and Trumpets - Added a "pp" on the last beat like in all other parts. (Also in col.13-4 added "&1") Movement 3 - Un poco Allegretto e grazioso (2/4) m.1-70; (6/8) m.71-108; (2/4) m.109-164. All winds and brass - m.162-163 - In the score the tied notes between these measures were not able to be represented with two parts on each staff. In "ss2ed" the error message T10101 appeared - "Possible problem in data or logical error in program." Violin 1 - m.61; Violin 2 - m.153-157; Violas - m.22-25, 152- 157, 160-161; Celli - m.152-153 were marked "div." and separate tracks were made for those parts, but there are many other double stops which should be divided.
