NOTES on Vivaldi Opus 2 - Violin Sonatas I - XII for Violino e Basso per il Cembalo from the copy belonging to the Library of Congress Estienne Roger Marchand Libraire, Amsterdam [facsimile] from scanned material done by Don Anthony in July & August 2004 transferred to CCARH stage2 format by Fran Bennion & into files md\vivaldi\roger\viol_son\op02no01 - op02no12 The notes, their values, stem directions, rests, beamings, and fermatas were scanned with a high degree of accuracy. Accidentals, especially in ( ), were not always scanned accurately - sharps often scanned as naturals, naturals as sharps, and fermatas occasionally missed altogether. "&0" was entered in col.13-14 of note records indicating editorial material from the source, in this edition often a cautionary accidental. "&1" = a CCARH editorial. On the next line "@1" + an explanation of the problem. . Dynamics were scanned as Musical Directions with "*" in col.1, "G" in column 17, & the dynamic in column 25. Vertical placement was adjusted in "ss2ed". Roger also had many fewer dynamic markings and slurs than the scanned edition. The scanner picked up the Print suggestions "P C32:o" or "u" for each one. Roger had more cautionary accidentals than the scan, except for the 2nd note in an octave jump when Roger didn't restate the accidental. The facsimile had a light double bar between movements, but in movements where there are repeats (i.e. all movements of No. 1) their repeat signs are like our heavy double bars. At the end of movements where the second part was to be repeated there was a heavy ":|:" and there was also a light double bar to end the movement. I just entered our usual light-heavy double bar to end movements. Repeat signs in the middle of movements were not accurately scanned and when a ":|:" appeared near the end of a measure, i.e. just before the last 8th, an extra measure of an 8th note was created (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 1-3). Pick up measures were scanned as measure 1 so the measure numbers also had to be changed for that reason. Repeat signs at the end of a line in Ricordi were scanned as "mheavy2 :|". There would then be a measure of music and a "mheavy3 |:" appeared. (See No.1, Mv.4) The headings (rows 4-9) were redone and notes (i.e. the fact that Op.2 No.1 was in g minor but was notated in one flat) were added. Tempo markings had to be added (i.e. D:Allegro). An "S" appeared at the beginning of line 13 just below the "$" in most files and was removed. The "/" through the figure "7" actually looks like a flat and acts like one. The "\" through the figure "6" is more normal and acts like a +. A "\" in conjunction with a 5 or a 9 didn't didn't print so I used "5+". SONATA V in b minor, RV 36 Movement 1 - Preludio, Andante (C) Meas. 5 - Violino - The E5 was scanned a natural and Roger has an E#5. There is a "x" on C#4 in Bc. Meas. 6 - Violino - The 2nd E5 in the measure reverts back the key signature, which is understood but Roger doesn't have a natural sign on it. The Bc. has an E natural there. Meas. 7 - Violino - The 1st note is a G natural in both the scan and in Roger, but I would have expected a G#4. Meas. 8 - Violino - The last note was scanned as a G#5 but Roger has it as a G5. That coupled with the G3 mentioned above makes me want to get ANOTHER OPINION ON MEASURES 7-8. Meas. 8 - Bc. - The end of beat 3 was scanned as G#3 but was G3 in Roger. The violino has G#s in the first 2 1/2 beats & I would have expected the harmony not to change until the 4th beat but entered G3. Meas.13 - Violino - The 2nd note in beat 1 was scanned as a D5 but in Roger it was a D#5. The harmony changes on beat three and the D#5 in the first beat reverts to the key signature. The scan has the 2nd D5 a natural also. Meas.14 - Violino - No natural signs on the last 2 notes in Roger but the harmony has changed & there is a G natural in the Bc., so I entered A5 and G5 as in the scan. Meas.18 - Bc. - Scan missed fermata on last note. Movement 2 - Corrente, Allegro (3/4) Meas.26 - In Roger the repeat sign was between a dotted half note & an 8th pickup note, & the last note of the movement was also a dotted half. (Too many beats.) 1st & 2nd endings added to clarify duration of notes. The scan failed to detect the start of the first ending and also did the usual trick of making an extra measure for just the 8th note so that measures had to be renumbered. Meas.27 - Violino - The 3rd note scanned as F#5. A5 in Roger. Meas.29 - Violino - Scan missed trill on the A5. Meas.30 - Violino - Last note scanned as G5. G#5 in Roger. Meas.31 - Violino - # carries over bar line. In Bc. a "6\". Meas.32 & 36 - Violino - 1st note scanned as E5. In Roger an E#5 and in Bc. an "x" on C#. Meas.38 - Bc. - Scan missed the # on the E3. E#3 in Roger. Meas.39 - Bc. - Scan missed the # on the A3. A#3 in Roger. Meas.46 - Bc. - Scan missed the # on the D3. D#3 in Roger. There had just been a "x" on B2 in the Bc. Meas.54 - Violino - First note scanned as A4. F#4 in Roger. Meas.58 - V. & Bc. - A fermata was scanned into the first and second endings of the piece. I only left it in the second ending. Possibly leave it in both places? Movement 3 - Giga, Presto - Violino (6/8); Bc. (2/4) In the scanned track of the Bc., "C1:p3" appeared below EVERY note in the track. They were eliminated in the file. They caused a "run-time error: attempt to divide by integer zero" in "ss2ed". In the scanned Bc. file, the musical attributes "Q:2" and "T:2/4" appeared, & in column 8 the note values for quarter notes appeared as "3". (Violino & Bc. have "Q:2" and 6 beeps/measure so sound files may need to be adjusted.) Meas.29 & 31 - Violino - Natural carries over bar line. Old notation.
