NOTES on Vivaldi Opus 2 - Violin Sonatas I - XII

    Estienne Roger Marchand Libraire, Amsterdam [facsimile] from 
    scanned material done by Don Anthony in July & August 2004 
    transferred to CCARH stage2 format by Fran Bennion & into files 
            md\vivaldi\roger\viol_son\op02no01 - op02no12 

      The notes, their values, stem directions, rests, beamings, and 
    fermatas were scanned with a high degree of accuracy. Accidentals, 
    especially in ( ), were not always scanned accurately - sharps 
    often scanned as naturals, naturals as sharps, and fermatas 
    occasionally missed altogether. "&0" was entered in col.13-14 
    of note records indicating editorial material from the source, 
    in this edition often a cautionary accidental.  "&1" = a CCARH 
    editorial. On the next line "@1" + an explanation of the problem.                        .

      Dynamics were scanned as Musical Directions with "*" in col.1, 
    "G" in column 17, & the dynamic in column 25.  Vertical placement 
    was adjusted in "ss2ed".  Roger also had many fewer dynamic 
    markings and slurs than the scanned edition.  The scanner picked 
    up the Print suggestions "P C32:o" or "u" for each one. Roger had  
    more cautionary accidentals than the scan, except for the 2nd 
    note in an octave jump when Roger didn't restate the accidental.  

      The facsimile had a light double bar between movements, but in 
    movements where there are repeats (i.e. all movements of No. 1) 
    their repeat signs are like our heavy double bars.  At the end 
    of movements where the second part was to be repeated there was 
    a heavy ":|:" and there was also a light double bar to end the 
    movement.  I just entered our usual light-heavy double bar to 
    end movements.  Repeat signs in the middle of movements were not 
    accurately scanned and when a ":|:" appeared near the end of a 
    measure, i.e. just before the last 8th, an extra measure of an 
    8th note was created (i.e. No. 1, Mvt. 1-3).  Pick up measures 
    were scanned as measure 1 so the measure numbers also had to be 
    changed for that reason.  Repeat signs at the end of a line in 
    Ricordi were scanned as "mheavy2  :|". There would then be a 
    measure of music and a "mheavy3  |:" appeared. (See No.1, Mv.4) 
    The headings (rows 4-9) were redone and notes (i.e. the fact 
    that Op.2 No.1 was in g minor but was notated in one flat) were 
    added.  Tempo markings had to be added (i.e.  D:Allegro).  An 
    "S" appeared at the beginning of line 13 just below the "$" in 
    most files and was removed.  

      The "/" through the figure "7" actually looks like a flat and 
    acts like one.  The "\" through the figure "6" is more normal 
    and acts like a +.  A "\" in conjunction with a 5 or a 9 didn't 
    didn't print so I used "5+".  

    SONATA III in d minor, RV 14 

      Movement 1 - Preludio, Andante (C)                  
        Notes occasionally not lined up vertically.  Note meas. 7.  
        Meas. 3 - Violino - F5s at the end of the measure revert to 
          the key signature for harmonic reasons.  No natural in 
          Roger but understood.  A natural on the F5 in the scan. 
        Meas. 4 - Violino - Scan missed trill on C#5.  
        Meas. 6 - Violino - C5 at the end of the measure reverts  
          key signature for harmonic reasons.  No natural in Roger.  
        Meas. 8 - Violino - Roger ended with two 16ths, short an 8th.  
          Figure "6" on Ef3 suggests, as does the similar rhythm end 
          of m. 9, that the C5 16ths should be 8ths as in the scan. 
        Meas.10 - Violino - Flat carries over bar line. Old notation.  
        Meas.11 - Bc. - Scan missed the flats on the E4s.              
        Meas.18 - Violino - Naturals missing on the B4 & last F4 in 
          Roger. Understood. Needed for the harmony. Leading to the 
          key of the coming cadence.  See m. 39. Scan had naturals.  
        Meas.19 - Violino - Scan missed trill on B3.  
        Meas.35 - Violino - Scan missed # on C#4. (Bc. has # on A3.) 
        Meas.39 - Violino - No flat on the last B4 in Roger.  Harmony  
          changes.  Reverts to key signature. Old notation. Note m.18. 
        Meas. 39 - Bc. - Roger has mistakenly drawn a bar line after 
          two quarter notes.  
        Meas. 40 - V. & Bc. - No fermatas in scan. Fermatas in Roger.  

      Movement 2 - Corrente, Allegro (3/4)                
        Meas. 11 - Violino - First note scanned as E5.  In Roger it  
          was B4 with the natural understood (carried over bar line).  
        Meas. 20 - Violino - Scan missed the double repeat sign.  

      Movement 3 - Adagio (C)                             
        Meas. 3 - Bc. - Scan missed the # on the C3s.  C# necessary 
          for harmonic reasons.  
        Meas. 4 - Violino - Scan missed tr on C5 (3rd beat).  
        Meas. 4 - Bc. - F3s at the end of the measure revert to the 
          the key signature for harmonic reasons.  No natural in 
          Roger but understood.  The scan has a natural on the F3.  

        Meas. 9 - Violino - 2nd note scanned as Bf4.  Roger had B4.  
          A B natural is harmonically necessary.  

      Movement 4 - Giga, Allegro (12/8)                   
        Typical repeat sign problems & more than the usual number of 
          slurs scanned incorrectly.  
        Meas. 1 & 25 - Violino - Stems on last quarter & grace notes 
          are up.  Hard to believe this was accurately scanned.  
        Meas.28 - Bc. - First note scanned as A2.  A3 in Roger.  
        Meas.30 - V. & Bc. - Scan missed fermata on last note.
