Concerto in F Major, Op.10, No. 1b, "La Tempesta di Mare", RV 570 Score in Giordano 31, 353-356, Torino Movement 1 - [Allegro] This movement has 67 measures and Le Cene has 75 measures. In photographing the manuscript, the ends of some of the pages were missed or hard to read. These notes I entered in those sections were put in a small font. Eleanor should evaluate these sections, i.e. m.9, 19-20, 40-41, and 65-66. For the first 42 measures the Flute and Basso parts of both versions are almost identical with the musical material of the middle voices distributed slightly differently. In RV 570 an extra measure was thrown in. From meas.42+ to meas.48+ there is a Violin solo of chords and repeated 16ths, and in RV 433 there is a Flute solo which is more of an arpeggiated figure. The harmony there is similar, with the other voices moving in quarter notes. The next ~6 measures is new material. This section in Le Cene evolves into a flute solo with triplets and a dotted rhythm. Meas. 63 to the end in Le Cene is almost identical to Meas.54 to the end in Giordano. RV 570 has a repeated measure thrown in. Each system in the manuscript has five staffs. The first one is for Flauto Trans., the fourth for Fagotto, and the fifth for Basso e Violette (viola). The second one the Oboe shares with violins, and the third one the Viol. Princ. also shares with violins, but the Viol. Princ. solo and Oboe solo sections are indicated. We have chosen to put the Flute, Oboe, & Bassoon parts at the top of each system, for clarity. The violins are on staffs 4 & 5, with the Viol.Princ. & Viol.1 sharing staff 4 except at measure 42 in the first movement, where we have indiacated that Violin 1 drops down to play with Violin 2 for a few measures. Meas.9\5-8 - All tracks. The second beat of this measure is at the end of a page and can't be read. Assume the notes are the same as measure 10. Same as in Le Cene and Malipiero for RV 570. Meas.19\10 - Track 1. The rest of the measure was unreadable. Entered as in Le Cene. Malipiero for RV 570 had an additional eighth. 19\9 - Track 2. The rest of the measure unreadable. Entered a E5 quarter note as in RV 433. Malipiero for RV 570 had 8 E5 16ths. Tracks 3, 6, & 7 Giordano indicated should all play with the Basso and I entered them as in RV 433. Malipiero didn't have the harmony changing as did Giordano in these voices. Track 4 - Entered like RV 433. Same in Malipiero's RV 570. Track 5 - The Violin 2 shares the same staff in Giordano with the oboe. RV 433 had an E5 quarter note on the third beat, which I entered for the oboe. But if the texture here is going to be like RV 433, with the upper voices stopping and the lower voices answering in a chord of repeated 16th notes, then it makes sense for the Violin 2 to continue on in this measure with the E5s (the other voices have the C and G of the chord). Malipiero's edition of RV 570 is the same. Meas.20, beats 1-3 were unreadable and the version entered (RV 433) was slightly different in some of the tracks from Malipiero's version of RV 570. Meas.28\6 - Bassoon, Viola, & Basso Entered E naturals. No flat in Giordano 31 or Malipiero for RV 570. Le Cene had Eb. Meas.41\1-12 - Tracks 1-2, 4-5. Entered as in m.40 of RV 433. The same in Malipiero for RV 570. Unreadable in manuscript. The remaining tracks were slightly different in Malipiero's RV570. Meas.42-48+ - Track 4. The manuscript has quarter note chords with repeated 16ths above. There is no way it can be performed like that so I have added 16th note tails to the quarter note chords. Meas.51 I believe all of the Bs in the first half of this measure should be flatted and Malipiero has them all as editorial B naturals. There were no naturals on the Bs in the microfilm in this measure except possibly in Viol.Princ. I think that the mark before the B4 in that track was meant to be a flat, used to clarify that the earlier B natural in meas.49 of Viol. Princ. is now lowered to the Bb of the key signature. Malipiero has editorial B naturals in tr.1, 4, & 5 the first half of this measure. I think it sounds all right with B flats. Meas.65 - Track 1. Only the first two 16ths of meas.65 and the last 3 eighths of m.66 were readable on the microfilm. Meas. 65-67 were entered like the last 3 measures of RV 433. Malipiero for RV 570 differs at the end of m.65 (having four F5 eighths) and in m.66 (the C scale being an octave lower and the first eighth an F4 instead of a C5). The other tracks were also entered like RV 433 and differed in a similar way from Malipiero's version of RV 570. Movement 2 - Largo This movement was 27 measures long. Le Cene RV 433 had 23 measures. The primary difference was in the flute part. In Le Cene it had extended passages in triplets accompanied by other voices either in dotted rhythms or quarters. In Giordano the flute was in a dotted rhythm accompanied by other voices in dotted rhythms or by just the bassoon. I entered the viola part an octave above the Basso part. In Malipiero for RV 570 he has the viola playing at the same pitch as the Basso for meas.1-12 and then up an octave for meas.13-27. Movement 3- Presto This movement has 146 measures and Le Cene 142. Much of the movement is very similar in both versions. Measures 3-6, 9-12, 15-16, 55-60, and the last 33 measures are essentially identical. Le Cene throws in triplets from time to time (i.e. m.50, 79, & 88), whereas Giordano has running 16ths. The Basso and "Violette" share the bottom staff in Giordano & I entered the Viola part an octave above the Basso. At meas.55 Malipiero in RV 570 entered the Viola an octave lower in m.55- 60 and then resumed having it play an octave above the Basso. At meas.55 I have the Viola playing an F5, which many editors would put in the treble clef, but I feel that is not necessary. Meas.6\2 The remainder of meas.6 until the last eighth of meas.8 were unreadable (end of page). Entered measure 6 as in Le Cene, and meas. 7-8 as in the restated material in m. 99-100. Same in Malipiero's version of RV 570. Meas.55-56 These measures were at the end of a page and largely unreadable. Entered the notes in Le Cene. Same in Malipiero's edition of RV 570. Eleanor should check this section. At the end of meas.54 in the Oboe and Violin tracks of Giordano there appear treble G clefs. There is a possible F5 eighth note in Track 2 at the beginning of meas.55 (not quite as clear as in the flute part) and I wonder if these parts should continue and double the flute part from here until meas.63 where Giordano has different notes for the Oboe and Violins. Le Cene has them playing here in RV 433 but Malipiero in RV 570 does not. Meas.63\2 - Tracks 1-2 & 5. D5s in Giordano. In Malipiero for RV 570 they were D4s, with an ed. note about D5s in the manuscript. Meas.73\2,6 - Track 3. Entered editorial B naturals like an identical passageal in meas.81. Same in Malipiero for RV 570. Meas.74\2 - Track 4. Entered editorial # on the C5. Harmonic reasons. Malipiero has a natural. Eleanor should check out this section. Meas.75\6 - Track 1. Entered editorial F natural. Old notation. The harmony changes at the end of the measure.` Same in Malipiero. Meas.91\1 - Track 4. Entered editorial natural on the B4. Accidental carries over from previous meas. and natural in Track 5. Meas.92\1 Track 3 & 7 Entered E3 as in Giordano. Malipiero has an A2 with a note that in the manuscript it is E3. Meas.97 End of page. Entered as in meas.5-7 (also Le Cene m.94-5). Same in Malipiero's RV 570. Meas.128-122 Track 1. Giordano 31 has an extra beam on the notes in the run (as if 64th notes). Think the run should be in 32nd notes like meas. 131, 133, etc. and like Malipiero for RV 570. Meas.138-39 The end of meas. 138 and the begining of m.139 were at the end of a page. Entered as in meas. 135-6 of Le Cene. Same in Malipiero for RV 570.
