Concerto in Bb Major, Op. 10, No. 2c, "Night", RV 501 for Bassoon and Strings Score in Giordano 31, pp 64-71, Torino (Very different from RV 104) Movement 1 - Largo, Andante molto, in common time (C) The meter for Opus 10, Nos. 2 and 2a is 3/4. RV 501 also begins with a dotted rhythm followed by an upward scale. and the bassoon is given some solo upward scales After 10 measures of Largo this movement goes into an Andante molto which features the bassoon in triplet passages. RV439 and RV104 give the triplets to the top voice. There are 19 measures in RV501 and 28 measures in RV439 and RV104. Angelo Ephrikian is the editor for Ricordi's RV 501. He has added (1 solo) for track 5 midway through meas.11 and (Tutti) halfway through meas.14. I have not designated instruments for the sound files yet. Movement 2 - Fantasmi, Presto. The meter is the same in all versions of Op.10, No.2. RV501 has 35 measures. RV439 has 22 measures of Presto and 9 measures of Largo. RV104 has 22 measures of Presto and 9 measures of Largo and Andante. All versions feature rapid upward scales and RV501 showcases the bassoon in this movement. Ephrikian indicates (1 solo) and (Tutti) for track 5 several times in this movement. Added a slur for Violin 2 third beat of meas.2. Measure 13\7 - Tracks 2-5 entered editorial E naturals. Naturals not apparent in microfilm but it is quite washed out here. E natural at beginning of measure in the solo part and the harmony stays the same for the entire measure. Ricordi has B naturals. Meas. 26\14 - Tracks 2-4 entered editorial C natural. Old notation. Late in measure, harmony changed but accidental not restated. C natural in same run in Bassoon and [Basso]. Editorial natural in Ricordi. Meas. 32\9 - Tracks 1 & 4 entered editorial A natural. Old notation? There is a break mid measure. The harmony changes but accidentals are not restated. It seems like it should be in major for a Bb cadence is coming up in two measures. No natural apparent in Giordano. Ricordi has editorial natural. Movement 3 - Presto, Adagio. This movement is in Bb Major and the meter is 3/8. Like RV 439 and RV 104 it is largely in running 8ths, though the meter for Op. 10, Nos. 2 and 2a is 3/4. This movement is considerably shorter than Nos. 2 and 2a. There are 25 measures of Presto and two measures of Adagio. RV 439 has 46 measures and RV 104 has 51 measures. No soloistic material for the bassoon in this movement. It just doubles the Basso. Like RV 439 and RV 104 it ends on the dominent. Meas.21-22 - Tracks 1 & 5. Slurs added as in other tracks. Meas.23 Tracks 1-3, & 5. Slurs added, as in viola part. Movement 4 - Il Sonno [Andante molto] In RV 439 and RV 104 it was Largo. (Andante molto) was Ephrikian's designation in Ricordi. This movement was in two flats. Op. 10, Nos. 2 & 2a were in 3 flats. The bassoon has running eighths and sixteenths in this movement and the rest of the voices have tied dotted half notes. In Nos.2 & 2a, there is a lot less movement. (The top three voices have some moving quarter notes.) I added a number of slurs to the bassoon part (see file for documentation). It seems like they were intended throughout. Added editorial ties meas.11,18, t.5. Meas.11 & 18 - Track 5. Added editorial ties as in other parts. Meas.14\1 - Violin 2. Entered editorial natural. B natural in bassoon. Harmony calls for one. Editorial B4 natural in Ricordi. Meas.20-21 - Violin 2. Entered editorial tie as in Violin 1 and Basso. Movement 5 - Sorge L'Aurora, Allegro. This movement is in common time as were RV 439 and RV 104. It is in Bb+, notated in two flats, and 82 measures long. This movement in RV 439 and RV 104 were also Allegros but in g minor and are 63 and 81 measures long respectively. At the end of this movement in the manuscript (meas. 72 1/2) there is written "D. C. al Segno # Sino al Segno (fermata sign)". The # sign comes half way through measure 5. The fermata sign is actually not visable but I'm sure it was intended to be on the third beat of measure 14. I have written out the musical material. Meas.22 - Track 1 has an F2 half note tied to meas. 23. The manuscript indicates that the Bassoon plays with the Basso at this point. Ricordi has an editorial F3 (quarter note), a quarter rest, and F2 (half note) in this measure with a note that the manuscript has an F2 (whole note). Meas. 30-31 - Track 1. The fact that there were sharps on the third of each group of four 16th notes for beats two and three but not on the one in beat four is an indication to me that the third note in the last group of four 16ths in these measures revert back to naturals. Ricordi also has F3 and G3 naturals. Meas. 31\10 - Track 1. Entered editorial E4 natural. The C# in the bass seems to indicate we're in A+ and an E natural is more appropriate than the E flat of the key signature. Ricordi also has an E4 natural. Meas.49 - Track 5. Entered editorial E4 natural. Natural mistakenly left out? Twice in the same measure there are naturals marked in front of the E4s in the Bassoon part.
