Concerto in G Minor, Op. 10, No. 2a, RV 104, "Night" for Flute or Violin, Bassoon, Violins 1 & 2, and Basso Score in Giordano 31, pp 243-249, Torino Movement 1 - Largo in 3/4 This movement and the first movement of Le Cene both have 28 measures. Track 1 is quite similar in both versions except for meas 13-16. In those measures the triplet figures are similar but far from identical. The harmony in this version is a simple G pedal but in Le Cene RV 439 it is more complex and changes with each measure. There are two Ricordi editions that I occasionally refer to in the notes for this Concerto: 1) The one for RV 439, which I entered from Le Cene, edited by Gian Francesco Malipiero and 2) The one for RV 104, which I entered using the manuscript found in Giordano p.243, edited by Angelo Ephrikian. Meas.10\3 - Track 1 has an A5. Malipiero for RV 104 has a cautionary flat here but not in RV 439. Le Cene does not have a flat. Meas.18 - Violin 1. I entered an editorial flat on the E4. There is a questionable flat in front of these E4s in Giordano. It is the shape of a flat but if it is a flat in the manuscript, the rhythm is wrong. Measures 17-18 should possibly be the same as measures 20-21 just as meas 23-24 are the same as m.26-27. It is less jarring to remain in minor. Movement 2 - Fantasmi - Presto, Largo, Andante This movement has the same number of measures as Le Cene RV 439 and both have a Largo beginning on m.23. The rhythmic pattern of tracks 4 & 5 for meas. 20+ - 21 is an 8th, a 16th rest, and three 32nd notes. In Le Cene RV 439 it is four 16ths. The Largo begins with a G2, B4, D5, F6 chord. In Le Cene the the first chord is B3, B4, B4, B4, B5 and these 9 measures are quite different, but track 1 has some similar thematic material. The bassoon has several triplet 16th note passages. In Le Cene the accompaniment is running eighths in the lower tracks. The last chord is basically D minor with an arpeggiated florish . in the bassoon, whereas Le Cene ends with an F Major chord. Meas.22\2 - Entered Bb in all parts. Le Cene had naturals on all but the Violin 1 part and I entered B naturals in all voices in Le Cene. Malipiero (for RV 439) had the same. There is no natural in front of any of the Bs in Giordano's RV 104 or in Ricordi for RV 104 (ed. by Ephrikian). Bb makes more musical sense. In Giordano for RV 104, there is an extra quarter note (an F2) at the beginning of this measure in track 5, however! Meas.27\9 - Track 1 On the 4th beat of the manuscript there appears to be an F5 eighth note which was partially erased. The rest was a quarter rest, which is in keeping with the succeeding pattern in track one in the rest of the Andante. Movement 3 - Presto This movement has 51 measures and Le Cene has 46. The main added material begins at meas.37. Before that the Bassoon was given the soloistic material of both tr.4 & tr. 5 of Le Cene. It ends essentially the same with an extra measure or so thrown in. Meas.7\1 - Ef5 in Violin 1. Eb makes more musical than the E natural that was in Le Cene. Malipiero for RV 439 has E natural and Ephrikian for RV 104 has Eb5. Meas.13\3,5 - Viola has C3 here and in Le Cene, but they are A3s in Malipiaro. (Wrong)! Meas.25\12 = E5 in Flute. Ricordi for RV 104 also had E5. Le Cene and Ricordi for RV 439 have Eb. E5 natural seems right. Meas.39\4 - Track 1 has an editorial F#5. Harmonically an F# seems more appropriate. Ricordi for RV 104 has an editorial sharp. Meas.51\1 - Violin 2 ends this movement with E4. No flat in front of this note in Le Cene or Giordano. Malipiero has entered an editorial natural for RV 439 ending the movement in major and Ephrikian has an editorial flat for RV 104 ending it in minor! There were arpeggios with many clearly marked E flats leading up to the end, so one might think it should end in minor. Movement 4 - Il Sonno - Largo This movement has 32 measures and Le Cene has 27. They are very similar harmonically and in feel. There is a more extended ending in RV 104. Meas.17\2 - Violin 1. Editorial B natural. No natural in Giordano but harmonically more believable as a natural. Ephrikian had a Bb here. I believe this note and the first note of m.18 should both be naturals like Le Cene. Ephrikian had them both as Bb. In Giordano, the first note of m.18 had a clear natural sign. Meas.17\3 - Violin 1 & 2 have A naturals. Think the Ab in Le Cene is wrong for there is an A natural in the violas. (The Violin 2 has that line in RV 104). Ephrikian had a natural in RV 104. Movement 5 - Allegro This movement has 81 measures and Le Cene has 63. The first 33 meas. are similar but then RV 101 inserts 10 measures. At meas.57+ another 3+ measures is inserted. At measure 63, another five measures is inserted. The last 14 measures are essentially the same. The bassoon frequently takes the musical material away from Le Cene's track 5 or doubles it. Meas. 45-55 were notated in whole note chords in Giordano and I have written them out in the arpeggiated form in which they would be played (same as m.35-45 in Le Cene). Meas.21\2 - Track 1 - E5. No flat on the E5 in Giordano. Le Cene has an Eb, Malipiero for RV 439 has Eb, and Ephrikian in the Ricordi version of RV 104 has an editorial Eb. I think that an E natural sounds all right and don't feel there is sufficient reason to change it.
