BB Mus.ms. Bach P 610 begins with a title inscription in Bach's handwriting:

&dBAuffrichtige Anleitung, 
&dBWormit denen Liebhabern des Clavires, besonders aber denen Lehrbegierigen, 
&dBeine deutliche Art gezeiget wird, nicht alleine (1) mit 2 Stimmen reine 
&dBspielen zu lernen, sondern auch bey weiteren progressen (2) mit dreyen 
&dBobligaten Partien richtig und wohl zu verfahren, anbey auch zugleich gute 
&dBinventiones nicht alleine zu bekommen, sondern auch selbige wohl 
&dBdurchzuf[ue]hren, am allermeisten aber eine cantable Art im Spielen zu 
&dBerlangen, und darneben einen starcken Vorschmack von der Composition zu 
&dB[ue]berkommen.

In his Introduction to the Dover facsimile (1968), Eric Simon translates the 
inscription thus:

&dBSincere instruction wherewith amateurs of the clavier, in particular the ones 
&dBavid to study, are shown a distinct manner &d@[or, "clear way" --S.R.]&dB not only 
&dB(1) to learn how to play cleanly with two voices, but also in the course of 
&dBfurther progress (2) to deal correctly and nicely with three obbligato parts; 
&dBat the same time, not only to get good &d@inventiones &dBof their own, but also to 
&dBdevelop them well; mostly, however, to achieve a singing manner of playing, 
&dBand along with it to receive a strong foretaste of composition. Made by Joh.
